About Harvey

Harvey G. Schwartz’s passion for rattan furniture, and Paul T. Frankl’s designs in particular, began in 1969 when he opened his first store. His pursuit heightened when, in 1978, he purchased the then 55-year-old Tropical Sun Rattan. In 1977, he opened his beloved storefront, Harvey’s on Beverly, and dedicated himself to collecting, restoring, and selling genuine Frankl rattan pieces of the highest quality. Harvey is also the author of the hardcover book Rattan Furniture: Tropical Comfort Throughout the House, which showcases more than 400 color photographs of rattan furniture design, placing the styles and materials in historical context.

Over decades, Harvey’s exhaustive research, discerning eye, and meticulous care have made him the preeminent authority on Frankl’s rattan works. His established expertise has allowed him to preserve the integrity of these pieces to museum-quality standards with every wrapping and joint inspected by Harvey himself to guarantee the finest product available, to enjoy for years to come. Major collectors, museums, and renowned publications have lauded Harvey as “The  Rattan Man,” acknowledging his collection as the most extensive grouping of Frankl’s iconic rattan pieces in the world.

The success of Tropical Sun Rattan  and Harvey’s on Beverly has made Harvey a go-to source for celebrities and tastemakers from the very start of his rattan business. One of his earliest major sales was providing a set of Frankl rattan furniture to Barbra Streisand for her Malibu beach house. A few years later, Harvey produced a version of Frankl’s Fan Arm Chair for the set of the hit TV series “The Golden Girls,” sparking a widespread rattan revival. Now, Harvey is still outfitting homes for style icons, such as Poppy and Cara Delevingne, whose tropical-themed rattan interior graced the cover of Architectural Digest in 2020.
